Many dog owners ask if crate training a dog is cruel?
My own experience has shown that crate training can be done with great sensitivity and caring! When you bring a new puppy home, you are already aware that you have taken on a new responsibility. The first few weeks will involve waking up many times during the night to let your new family member outside. This is not as bad as it sounds, since it will only last a few weeks.
Time spent with in home dog training of your puppy during this first few weeks will mean a lot to both family and puppy. It is during this time that the puppy will be forming lasting memories.
Let me give you my own opinion on crate training and whether it is cruel. Let's start with one of the main issues that you are faced with right away with your new puppy. That is -- housebreaking! When puppy first urinates on your brand new rug it may be hard sometimes to remember to keep your cool. Most experts recommend no punishment whatsoever when a pet decides to use the inside of your house as a bathroom. If you do catch your new puppy urinating or defecating in the act, one the best things to do is to distract him. This could include making a clapping noise. At this time you should take puppy outside to a location in your yard that you want him to get used to for relieving himself.
Utilizing the crate goes hand-in-hand with housebreaking your new puppy. The video below will give you more information about crating your puppy and you will be able to see the benefits not only for you but also for your new family member. As you will see in the video, a crate should never, ever be used for punishment.
